Abstract

Language has been identified as the most significant source of communication through which human beings share thoughts and ideas with each other. Being proficient in English, along with one’s mother tongue, is an instrumental tool to tackle the progressing globalised world. The purpose of the study is to analyse the influence of gender and medium of instruction on attitude towards English language learning among secondary school students. A descriptive survey method was followed to collect relevant information from a sample of 223 secondary school students. The Secondary Students’ Attitude towards Learning English Language Scale was adapted to collect data from the sample. One-sample t-test and the test of significance of difference between means for large independent samples were used to analyse the data.

The results indicated that secondary school students have an average level of attitude towards English language learning. It was also found that female students and secondary school students studying in English-medium schools have a higher attitude towards English language learning than male students and those studying in Malayalam-medium schools.
