Abstract

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasises the continuous professional development of teacher educators to help them achieve the desired competency levels. In the present study, the influence of selected demographic factors, namely gender and academic qualification, on the professional development of B.Ed. teacher educators in West Bengal was investigated. An ex post facto research design was adopted. The sample comprised 309 B.Ed. teacher educators drawn from 57 B.Ed. colleges across 18 districts of West Bengal using a proportionate stratified random sampling technique. An information schedule developed by the researcher was used for data collection. The data were analysed using an independent samples t-test.

The findings revealed that the professional development of teacher educators was independent of gender. Further, the results showed that teacher educators possessing a Ph.D. degree had significantly higher professional development levels compared to those without a Ph.D. The findings of the study may be useful for improving the quality of teacher education in terms of both teaching and research across different contexts.
