Abstract

The study presents community involvement in elementary schools located in a Scheduled Tribe-concentrated area of an aspirational district (Ri Bhoi) in Meghalaya. The data were collected through a schedule administered to community members covering the provisions of the Right to Education (RTE) Act, along with focus group discussions held with the stakeholders. The sample comprised community members associated with the selected schools. The quantitative data were analysed and presented using percentages and statistical figures.

The qualitative data were collected through open-ended items. The study found positive and encouraging trends in community involvement in children’s education and awareness of the facilities to which they were entitled in elementary schools. However, proper sensitisation of community members is needed so that they may strictly adhere to the provisions of the Act concerning their role in school management.
